Turning the 1965 Mystery Skater into a Leather Wrapped Skateboard Deck!
Hey guys - I’m Ethan Carter and I like to make and wrap iconic items in leather and I’ve wanted to wrap a skateboard deck in leather for a long time but just never found the right idea or inspiration. That is until I was recently watching two of my idols, Dan of The Danocracy and Tony Hawk’s latest search for who they refer to as the Icon of Style, Mystery Skater pictured in this 1965 picture from a Life Magazine’s story about skateboarding in central park. The second I saw it I had an image in my head of what I wanted the skate deck artwork to look like, but I have zero experience in creating my own digital artwork, so I went to UA-cam University real quick to see if I could figure out how to make the image in my head a reality and then made a leather wrapped skateboard deck using it! @TonyHawk - I made you a set of Penny Board versions like I did for Dan fyi!

    • @EthanCarterDesigns

Nope, I converted an automotive 1/2 inch extendable breaker bar for it...it more then doubles the pressure I can get out of it! I have a UA-cam short dedicated to some of the Arbor Press hacks I use which has a link to the breaker bar if you're interested ua-cam.com/video/45zXs64M7VY/v-deo.html

The baseball stitch can conform to irregular shapes really well. That's a lot of why steering wheels and baseballs use it. It also handles stress from odd angles pretty well.

Just some insight…. I’m not sure if the video was slightly sped up, but I’ve gone back in the first 5 minutes and still not quite sure how to do the stitch. Some of the film work could have been more close up for us who have never touched a needle and thread.

I like your design and technique, but a much simpler way is to cut a piece of Luan (thin plywood like paneling) about 6 x 6 inches (sand edges). Prep the leather and knife the same, but put it on the luan for a rigid backing, then put the whole thing inside a food vacuum sealer bag and vac it down. It perfectly forms the same contours in minutes, no effort. Leave it in the bag, under vac for 30 minutes. Carefully remove it and set it in the window to dry. Doing it since 1980. The luan backing during the process holds the mold down and leaves form flat for leather backing. No staples, pokes the bags.
